Hospital Overview

A super specialty heritage hospital in Kolkata where preserved history, advanced medical technology and NABH-aligned care come together to create a uniquely healing environment.

Restoring the Past, Advancing the Future of Healthcare

Charnock Lohia Hospital is a first-of-its-kind Super Specialty Heritage Hospital that reimagines healthcare by harmonising history, culture, and modern medicine. Located within a carefully restored heritage estate in the heart of Kolkata, the hospital stands as a symbol of continuity—where the wisdom of the past supports the science of the present.

Instead of dismantling a heritage built over centuries, we chose to preserve, restore, and respectfully adapt it. Every archway, courtyard, corridor, and façade has been thoughtfully conserved, allowing the soul of the historic building to remain intact while seamlessly integrating advanced medical infrastructure, technology, and global standards of patient care while maintaining the NABH protocols.

Heritage Architecture as a Healing Environment

The original architecture—marked by high ceilings, natural light, open verandahs, and timeless craftsmanship—creates a calming and restorative atmosphere. Research and experience alike affirm that such spaces foster mental peace, reduce stress, and support recovery. At our hospital, architecture is not a backdrop—it is an active participant in recovery.

Behind these historic walls operates a fully modern, multi-specialty healthcare facility—equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostics, critical care units, modular operation theatres and comprehensive outpatient and inpatient services. Our design philosophy ensures that heritage aesthetics coexist with clinical precision, without compromise.

Our Philosophy: Heritage Beyond Walls

At Charnock Lohia Hospital, heritage is not limited to bricks and arches. We believe true healing must honour India’s and Bengal’s living traditions, integrating them thoughtfully into everyday care and wellness.

Our philosophy is built on the belief that culture heals, community strengthens, and balance restores health. As part of this vision, we are committed to incorporating:

  • Indian and Bengali food traditions: Thoughtfully planned, nutrition-balanced meals inspired by regional and seasonal cuisines, rooted in familiarity and comfort.
  • Yoga and meditation: Structured practices to support physical rehabilitation, mental calm, stress management, and holistic well-being.
  • Adda-inspired community spaces: Informal conversation zones for moving patients inspired by the Bengali tradition of “Rock e bose adda”, encouraging connection, dialogue, and emotional support.
  • Mind-stimulating activities: Chess and other cognitive engagements to promote mental agility, focus, and interaction—especially during recovery phases.
  • Music and cultural expression: Gentle music and curated cultural elements that soothe the mind, uplift the spirit, and reconnect patients with joy and memory.

These elements are not recreational add-ons; they are intentional components of our healing ecosystem, designed to support recovery, resilience, and long-term wellness.

Compassion at the Core of Care

Our medical excellence is guided by a deeply human approach. Every doctor, nurse, and caregiver at Charnock Lohia Hospital is committed to ethical practice, empathy, and patient dignity. We treat individuals, not just illnesses—ensuring transparency, respect, and personalised attention at every step.

The History

Charnock Lohia Hospital Dating back to 1805, this premises housing the erstwhile 'Lohia Matri Seva Sadan' is a Grade 1 Heritage property listed by WB government. This grand structure served as palace residences of Mallick family and then to Seal family; eventually on to the famous Mullick family of Marble Palace fame. In 1943 this palace was acquired by a group of industrialists lead by Sri K L Lohia ji along with Sri G D Birla and converted into a Mother & Child hospital, which is lying shut since 2015. Charnock Hospital is converting this into a 250 Bed NABH compliant Super Specialty Heritage Hospital.
